We are excited to be looking to add to our team again! With an increase in job openings at Mason Construction, Ltd., we want to revisit some job hunting tips for getting hired in the construction industry. We are not a staffing agency, nor are we recruiters, but we have put together some basic tips from our experience and helpful websites for some basic tips. Whether you are applying to our business or another construction company, hopefully this can help.
Consider Your Resume
Resumes can be very subjective depending on the experience someone has and the job for which they are applying. It is helpful to have someone review your resume before submitting an application and organizations such as Workforce Solutions could be a useful tool in polishing your resume. You do want to tailor your resume to the construction industry if that is where you are seeking a job.
A key ingredient for applying to a construction job is to list construction industry credentials. This is especially important if the job description states credentials that are required for the job. If you have special certifications, include the date when you received it. Do not rely on acronyms so everyone is clear on the certifications you hold.
When going through the initial application process, be sure to stay honest throughout your resume and application. It is easy to want to make an accomplishment look more prestigious or to fluff the information, avoid that tendency. It is important to communicate a positive work history but something being misconstrued as a lie can ruin your chances of being hired.
And before turning in your resume, always proof read it. Enlist the help of family and/or friends to also proof read any materials you are providing to be sure it is clear and easily read. We often read our own words as what we meant to say.
Take a Similar Approach to an Interview
As with your resume, it is important to be open and honest in an interview. Know what you put on your application and resume materials and refer the interviewees back to that information when appropriate. Be specific about skills that you have and how they relate to the job you are applying for.
Practice common interview questions with family and friends to get comfortable in an interview setting. This also helps in determining what the most important information is and how you can stay clear and concise while answering. And again, stay honest.
