Spring Cleaning Tips

It's February and that means many people have started thinking about spring cleaning. Whether in your home or office, cleaning your area can help boost productivity and lower stress. According to a study by staffing firm, Adecco, 57% of workers admit to judging their coworker based on the cleanliness of their workspace.

If you want to clean up your space, whether home or office, consider these ten tips from Forbes.com:

  • Divide your workspace into zones. Identify what you want to use your space for and set up zones for your daily functions. This could include a computer zone, filing cabinet or storage for supplies. Identifying these zones can help provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.
  • Keep only what you need at arm’s length. The only thing immediately around you should be the things you need immediately. Supplies, paperwork and personal items can be kept somewhere else in your office.
  • Create a daily paper system. We often get overwhelmed with paperwork in the office. Streamlining the process with hanging files or baskets with labels can help you stay organized.
  • Establish limits. The amount of things you will tolerate often depends on the amount of space you have. Allowing yourself one bookshelf or area and when that becomes full, get rid of something before adding to it.
  • Sort your catch-all drawer. Many people will throw things into a desk draw to keep them out of site. But eventually, they forget what is even in the drawer. Using dividers can help keep things in place.
  • Don’t use e-mail as a to-do list. Who else gets too many emails in a day? Often we get tied into using our email as what we have to do next. Instead, try to organize your inbox similar to paper files so that you have emails that relate to one project together.
  • Streamline your desktop Icons. A screen overwhelmed with icons can trigger stress and makes it difficult to find files. To avoid this stress, create a logical digital filing system and reduce your desktop icons to a select few. Also, clear off any sticky notes or reminders from your monitor so they do not distract you from your work.
  • Hang hooks for outerwear. Personal items can quickly overwhelm a space if you do not have a special place for them to go. Hanging hoods in your office or from your wall can organizer your outerwear and provide an area specifically for those items.
  • Keep a basket or drawer for short-term storage. Even with great organization plans, sometimes things come up and items can overflow. If you need an area for short-term storage, keep a basket dedicated to items such as newspapers, magazines, and clean them out on a regular basis.
  • Disinfect regularly. Even if you are neat, dust, dirt and food can build up. Give your desk, phone, keyboard and monitor a wipe down at least once a week. This can also help you stay organized by taking time to throw away items that need to go.
